Time and Date

Reading date and time in English is not the same as in Czech, there are different prepositions and reading the „clock“ works a bit differently. With some repetition, though, it’s easy to get used to English phrases!

Čtení data a času v angličtině není stejné jako v češtině, jsou tu jiné předložky a čtení hodin funguje trochu jinak. S trochou procvičování ale bude lehké si na anglické fráze zvyknout!

Preposition on for days – on Monday*, on January the 6^th*.

* Note: we use capital letters for days and months.

Předložka on se používá pro dny – on Monday*, on January the 6^th*.

* Poznámka: v angličtině používáme velká písmena pro názvy dnů a měsíců.

Preposition at for saying what time – at 3 o’clock.

Předložka at k určování času (hodiny) – at 3 o’clock.

Preposition in or at for parts of the day – in the morning/afternoon/evening, at night, at noon, at midnight.

Předložka in nebo at se používá pro části dne – in the morning/afternoon/evening, at night, at noon, at midnight.

Preposition in for months, years and season – in December, in 2005, in winter.

Předložka in pro měsíce, roky a roční období – in December, in 2005, in winter.

Some other phrases – at the weekend.

Další fráze – např. at the weekend.

Because we are using cardinal numbers, we must place definite article the before that number: the 1^st, the 2^nd, the 13^th.

Protože používáme základní číslovky, musíme před každé číslo dát určitý člen the.

After the number, we add the month, e.g.: the 28^th December – we read this as the 28^th of December. Alternatively, we can say the months first and then add the number, e.g. January 15^th – we read this as January the 15^th.

Poté, co určíme datum, přidáme měsíc, např. the 28^th December (čteno jako the 28^th of December). Alternativně můžeme nejdřív říct měsíc a poté den, například January 15^th – čteno jako January the 15^th.

Note:

I always stay in bed longer on Saturday mornings. – even though we use the word morning which is connected with the preposition in, first goes Saturday in the sentence, so we use the preposition on for days.

Poznámka:

I always stay in bed longer on Saturday mornings. – se slovem morning se v angličtině pojí předložka in, ale v této větě stojí jako první den v týdnu, takže použijeme předložku on užívanou pro dny.
